Beijing Olympics 2008

Today: 11th, August 2008: So, after a long wait of 28 years India have finally won a gold at the Olympics. The Indian rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra wins the gold in the shooting event. After 1980, it was the first time that India have got a gold in any event at the Olympics and for the first time ever in any Individual Event in the Olympics. India participated in the Olympics in 1900 for the first time. The whole country is over whelmed at Bindra’s performance. All the news channels are flashing that news constantly.
But India, being the second largest country in the world population-wise and seventh largest area-wise, can’t produce people who are capable of winning gold at the Olympic Games. Who should be blamed? The sports persons themselves or the whole system responsible for this dilemma?
Well, USA, far behind India in the population can every time beat all the nations to top the charts at the Olympics. Whereas, we the Indians, always rank somewhere in the bottom. It’s a shame. It’s a shame for every person sitting at the positions holding the authority for governing the sporting activities in India. These people should be put to direct question, by the general public on our immensely bad performance at the international level in sports. Let it be any sport other than cricket these days, India are in a pitiful situation at the international level. The internal infra-structure has been worsened by these corrupt officials who just aim for their personal prosperity. These corrupt people have always shamed the country at the international platforms.
It’s high-time that our government should take some strong steps towards this issue. But, it is a Catch-22 situation. The government too comprises of these same corrupt people.
So, where lies the solution..?? No-body knows…

The solution lies within us. Its startlingly true that inspite of having such a large population we celebrate a lone bronze medal with euphoria . This year we got a single gold . Certainly its a matter of pride but at the same time , national shame . We indians love all sports , but only watching them . People are crazy about cricket or football , but watching it not going out and playing . Secondly , those who are genuinely interested in a career in sports have to face a lot . We Indians today have come down so low that we celebrate and go ga-ga over even trivial achievemnts . Thats why we are nuts over 50 ranked Sania Mirza . We copy the attire and gum chewing from the west but not their discipline hard work and cleanliness . And if we end up at the end of the table again this year at the Olympics , there's no one but 'us' to blame .

Hey Rahul i think bit different from you..though i appreciate wat u thought too.....First thing we dont have shortage of wonder kids at our home....they have proved thr worth evrytime inspit of all adversities in thr life...right from P.T.Usha...to Bindra...but have we ever thought or analysed Bindra's success..i make it clear before i start that I'm myself Fan of Bindra and i've no doubt in his potential ...but have u seen his shooting range at his home...and how many shooting ranges are thr in India whole...he's abt to get some 2.5 crores as gift from all state govt.but his father has spent 10crores to make him win gold....are we able to provide this firm background to our other sportspersons...infact thr are such stories abt retired players and thr adverse living conditions...why don't we ask our govt..how much they are spending evryyear on sports quota...in olympics too around 100 people went thr frm India out of which hardly 30 wud b sportsperson..and rest were officers to enjoy thr holiday....so friends its now high time to cum forward and ask the people we have given roghts to take our decision where our money we pay as tax is goin ???

Exactly disha , we a nation of billion have no dearth of talented individuals . But the entire sysytem is wrong . So we come back to the same point. Who's responsible? We offcourse . Barack Obama is the 10th nominee of the two major parties-Republicans and Democrats in the past twenty years to have graduated from either Harvard or Yale. Whats more astonishing is the fact that over the last twenty years these 2 parties had 12 nominations,so only 2 of them were not from either of the 2 universities. As indian's what should concern us is that how americans elect their president from amongst the products of its finest education systems whereas we are saddled with politicians of,to put it respectfully, considerably lower education attainment?
The belief in U.S. is that if you are skilled ,determined, and hardworking to make it to either Harvard or Yale then you deserve the highest office. Whereas most of us think and believe that if we are smart enough to break into our top most institutes, we have it in us to make it big in a 'real' profession. Graduates of the most exclusive universities in India consider it beneath them to enter the muck of politics. Politics , is generally for the middle class , for those who are incompetent people , unable to do anything else. Moreover the skills required to thrive in Indian politics have nothing to do with talents honed by a first class education. Isn't it time more well educated men enter our politics as we seek to carve out a place for ourselves in the 21st century world? And if more of them don't , don't we have only ourselves to blame if we get the politicians we deserve?

wo.. i didn't know this was the first gold in 28 years... it's both an achievement and a shame. I often get asked why India being the second most populous country can't produce many athletes. yes u can blame the bad infrastructure and lack of interest. most people would like to be cricketers, because that's where the green is. so this is for all Indians: get over this one guy winning a gold , we still have a long way to go.

rahul, i agree wid you, but juz notice this world's second most populous country on the globe and where do we lie on the international sports charts.
Well, i m sure u'll agree, that we stand at a shameful rank.

Even the small African nations, which are under-developed. eg consider Nigeria, even they can crack gold each time in the Olympics and we..?? the Indian?? we are at a pitiful stage.

The Infrastructure and the havoc that we create on small achievements, are responsible for this.

Consider soccer, india ranks 148th in the FIFA ratings.. isn't it shameful..?? the world's most famous sport, the international sport soccer, and India haven't ever qualified for the FIFA world cup.
once the did in 1950's, but couldn't play coz they did not have the proper soccer shoes (rather kit) supplied to them by the govenment due to lack of funds. Ridiculous..!!!

We go nuts on Sania Mirza ranked 30 (her highest ever), and her performance, i don't think i need to comment upon.
